H-1 Modular

This project explores a simple and flexible way of converting a small H1 van into a compact camper without permanently altering the vehicle.

The interior is made up of four independent timber modules that work together as a single system. Once placed inside the van, the modules lock against each other and the existing geometry of the vehicle, creating a stable and functional interior without being fixed to the body.

The main piece works as both a sofa and a bed. A series of interlocking timber slats form the sofa structure and can be pulled out and extended to create the sleeping platform. When not in use, the slats sit within the structure, leaving the space underneath open for storing surfboards.

The whole system can be assembled and removed when needed, allowing the van to switch between everyday use and camper mode with minimal effort. A small-scale project focused on flexibility, simplicity and making the most of limited space.
